Google Nest Thermostats: Product-Line, Compatibility, Platform, and Cost Analysis

Evidence summary: This analysis uses current official U.S. Google Store, Google Home/Nest support, warranty, security-update, privacy, ENERGY STAR, and connected-device sources checked July 25, 2026. It includes a dated price-conflict record and a deterministic, non-scoring product-line routing method. No thermostat was purchased, installed, tested, measured, ranked, or recommended. Exact compatibility and installation remain controlled by C17, the current Google checker/manual, property authority, and the qualified route required by the system.

Quick answer

Google’s current U.S. direct thermostat line has two products:

  • Nest Thermostat (2020) — the lower-cost, guided-schedule product;
  • Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) — the broader-system, learning-schedule product with one Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) included.

Current official Google pages were not fully consistent about cash price. Stable tech-spec/list pages displayed $129.99 for Nest Thermostat and $279.99 for Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), while other official product views displayed temporary promotional observations of $99.99 and $239.99 against those reference amounts. This article therefore uses the higher list/reference amounts for conservative hardware screening and treats the live cash price as a same-day recheck field.

The two current products are not interchangeable:

  • Nest Thermostat supports a narrower stage route, does not work with Nest Temperature Sensors, uses Quick Schedule, and sells its trim kit separately.
  • Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) supports broader conventional, heat-pump, fan, and whole-home accessory routes; includes one second-generation temperature sensor, trim plate, and steel plate; and adds Smart Schedule, Dynamic Farsight, Adaptive Eco, natural heating/cooling, and smart ventilation.
  • Either product can still fail the exact C17 compatibility or power route.
  • A lower sale price or a longer feature list does not create a purchase reason.

Use this order:

C16 says an upgrade is worth evaluating
→ C17 clears the exact Nest model, HVAC, power, permission, and installation route
→ C19 removes products that fail stage, accessory, sensor, schedule, platform, warranty, or bounded-cost requirements
→ retain one or more candidates, obtain professional review, hold, or make no purchase

A retained candidate is not a recommendation. It only survived the recorded requirements.

Do not start with the Google Store comparison

Use the smart thermostat buyer guide first. Keep the existing thermostat, try its current schedule, service the HVAC/building problem, or make no purchase when a connected upgrade does not own the problem.

Then complete the smart thermostat compatibility checklist. C19 does not interpret wire colors, choose a Nest Power Connector, approve an adapter, or authorize installation.

Do not continue until the household has recorded:

  • property and landlord/owner permission;
  • exact current thermostat and HVAC equipment;
  • control voltage and architecture;
  • heating/cooling stages;
  • heat pump, auxiliary/emergency heat, and dual-fuel state;
  • zones, transformers, fan speeds, accessories, and sensors;
  • exact Nest model checker result;
  • exact C-wire or Nest Power Connector route;
  • Google Account, Wi-Fi, Matter/platform, software-update, and move-out obligations;
  • installation owner;
  • conflicts and unknowns.

If C17 returns hold, incompatible, different control class, service first, or no permission, C19 cannot turn that result into a purchase.

Current product-line map

| Route | Current product | Conservative official list/reference amount checked July 25, 2026 | Distinguishing fields | Important boundary |
|—|—|—:|—|—|
| Direct retail | Nest Thermostat (2020) | $129.99 | Quick Schedule; Matter; Google Home app; works with the narrower current stage route | Not compatible with Nest Temperature Sensor; trim kit separate; some systems require C wire or Nest Power Connector |
| Direct retail | Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) | $279.99 | Smart Schedule; broader stages and accessories; Dynamic Farsight; Matter; one Temperature Sensor included | Exact checker still controls; current official cooling-stage fields conflict and are conservatively screened at two stages |
| Accessory | Nest Power Connector | $24.99 | Model-specific alternative power route when Google’s checker requires it | Not proof that a system is compatible; C17/qualified route controls installation |
| Accessory | Nest Thermostat Trim Kit | $14.99 | Trim and steel plate for Nest Thermostat | Not compatible with Nest Learning Thermostat or Nest Thermostat E |
| Accessory | Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) | Live price recheck required | One- and three-pack routes; up to six associated with a compatible thermostat | Not compatible with Nest Thermostat (2020); one is included with Learning 4th gen |
| Legacy/support | Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) | Not a current U.S. direct product | Existing installed-base and support route | Google’s current comparison labels it no longer sold |
| Legacy/support | Nest Thermostat E | Not a current U.S. direct product | Existing installed-base and sensor-support route | Do not treat support availability as a current new-product offer |

The routing method uses only the two current direct products. Legacy products remain separate support, condition, seller, generation, and warranty records.

Nest Thermostat (2020)

Nest Thermostat is the current lower-cost direct model.

Current official fields include:

  • $129.99 list/reference amount on current tech-spec pages;
  • an official promotional observation of $99.99 on some product-page views;
  • a mirrored 2.4-inch display and side touch bar;
  • motion, temperature, humidity, touch, and ambient-light sensors;
  • Quick Schedule in the Google Home app;
  • Eco, Seasonal Savings, and Savings Finder;
  • Google Home and Matter support;
  • voice control through compatible Hey Google, Alexa, or Matter platforms;
  • current published conventional support for one heating and one cooling stage plus a second stage of either heating or cooling;
  • current published heat-pump support for one heating/cooling stage plus auxiliary or emergency heat;
  • multi-zone use with one thermostat per zone, subject to exact power and zone-controller requirements;
  • current one-year standard retail warranty;
  • current three-year Nest Pro warranty route for qualifying U.S. Pro editions and installation;
  • trim kit sold separately;
  • Nest Temperature Sensor incompatibility.

Nest Thermostat can remain a candidate when:

  • C17 clears this exact model;
  • the system fits the narrower stage route;
  • no remote Nest Temperature Sensor is required;
  • no whole-home humidifier, dehumidifier, or ventilation control is required;
  • guided scheduling is acceptable;
  • any required Power Connector and trim cost is accepted;
  • the one-year standard or exact Pro warranty route is acceptable.

It can be eliminated even when Google’s broad “works with 85% of systems” statement sounds favorable. That percentage is not an exact household result.

Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen)

The fourth-generation Learning Thermostat is the current broader-system model.

Current official fields include:

  • $279.99 list/reference amount;
  • an official promotional observation of $239.99 on some product-page views;
  • one Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) included;
  • a larger 2.7-inch circular 600×600 display;
  • Soli motion sensing, temperature, humidity, and ambient-light sensors;
  • Smart Schedule that learns and can suggest or apply changes;
  • Dynamic Farsight;
  • Adaptive Eco;
  • natural heating and cooling;
  • smart ventilation;
  • Google Home and Matter support;
  • current compatibility guidance of up to three conventional heating stages and two cooling stages;
  • current heat-pump guidance of two compressor-heating stages plus up to two alternate/auxiliary stages and up to two cooling stages;
  • multi-speed fan and humidifier/dehumidifier/ventilation routes through exact current connectors and checker inputs;
  • trim plate and steel plate included;
  • current two-year standard retail warranty;
  • current five-year Nest Pro warranty route for qualifying U.S. Pro editions and installation.

The current Google Store technical specification mentions Y3 among available connector functions, while Google’s current compatibility page says the fourth-generation product supports up to two cooling stages. This package preserves that conflict and uses two cooling stages as the conservative routing limit. A system requiring a third cooling stage must remain on hold until Google support and the exact current manual/checker resolve it.

The fourth-generation model can remain a candidate when the household needs one or more of these fields:

  • learning schedule rather than guided manual schedule;
  • a compatible Nest Temperature Sensor, with one included;
  • broader stage or heat-pump support;
  • whole-home humidifier, dehumidifier, or ventilation control;
  • multi-speed fan support;
  • Matter control across an accepted platform;
  • a two-year retail warranty or qualifying five-year Pro route;
  • included trim and steel plates.

These fields do not make the model universally better. They matter only when the household needs them and C17 clears the exact system.

Temperature Sensor boundary

Google’s current Nest Temperature Sensor support page says:

  • Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen), and Nest Thermostat E are compatible;
  • Nest Thermostat (2020) is not compatible;
  • up to six sensors can be associated with one compatible thermostat;
  • the fourth-generation thermostat can use multiple selected sensors together and average their temperatures;
  • one second-generation sensor is included with the fourth-generation thermostat;
  • the sensor uses a replaceable CR2 battery with an advertised life of up to three years;
  • the sensor has a one-year limited warranty.

The current Google Store sensor page offers one- and three-pack choices but did not expose a stable static U.S. price in the accessible page record used for this package. Extra-sensor cost therefore remains unknown until a same-day live offer is recorded.

A sensor can help the thermostat control toward another room’s temperature. It does not create zoning, repair ducts, balance airflow, diagnose insulation, or prove comfort for every occupant.

Exact compatibility still controls

Nest Thermostat and Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) are both designed for many 20–30 VAC systems, but the supported system set differs.

Current Google guidance states:

  • high-voltage, millivolt, solid-fuel, many proprietary/communicating, and some micro-controller or zone-panel systems are incompatible or require a different professional route;
  • Nest Thermostat works with the narrower current stage set;
  • fourth-generation Learning Thermostat supports broader stages, fans, and whole-home accessories;
  • some heat-only, cool-only, heat-pump, or zone-controlled systems require a C wire or Nest Power Connector;
  • dual-fuel, dual-transformer, zones, accessory systems, and complex controls require exact model review;
  • one current product can support a system that the other cannot.

The current Nest Power Connector price is $24.99. It is not a generic compatibility converter. Google’s checker and current support route must identify whether it is appropriate, and C17 owns the installation boundary.

Dated price-conflict snapshot

The following observations come from official U.S. Google Store pages checked for this package.

| Item | Stable list/reference field | Promotional observation on another official view | Method treatment |
|—|—:|—:|—|
| Nest Thermostat | $129.99 | $99.99 | Use $129.99 for conservative hardware screening; same-day cash-price recheck required |
| Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) | $279.99 | $239.99 | Use $279.99 for conservative hardware screening; same-day cash-price recheck required |
| Nest Power Connector | $24.99 | None recorded | Add only when C17 says this exact accessory route is required |
| Nest Thermostat Trim Kit | $14.99 | None recorded | Applies only to Nest Thermostat; optional unless exact wall/electrical-box route requires it |
| Nest Temperature Sensor (2nd gen) | Not stably exposed | Not used | One included with Learning 4th gen; extra-sensor cost remains unknown |

This package deliberately does not select the lowest observed promotional value as the canonical price. Promotions can differ by date, signed-in state, color, inventory, location, experiment, financing, or offer eligibility.

Bounded hardware examples using conservative reference amounts:

Nest Thermostat:
$129.99

Nest Thermostat + required Power Connector:
$154.98

Nest Thermostat + trim kit:
$144.98

Nest Thermostat + Power Connector + trim:
$169.97

Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen):
$279.99, with one Temperature Sensor, trim plate, and steel plate included

Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) + required Power Connector:
$304.98

These are arithmetic screens, not:

checkout totals
installed costs
market-lowest prices
rebate-adjusted prices
lifecycle costs
payback
ROI
value rankings

They exclude tax, professional labor, new conductor, wall repair, permit, utility-program conditions, financing, extra sensors, shipping changes, and live promotions.

Platform and app differences

Both current models require the Google Home app for setup and control and both are presented as Matter-certified.

That does not make every platform experience identical.

Record:

  • the Google Account owner;
  • the Google Home structure and household members;
  • whether another Matter-certified platform and hub are required;
  • who has remote access;
  • supported voice assistants and devices;
  • automations and presence-sensing settings;
  • Wi-Fi and internet dependence;
  • software-update path;
  • move-out reset and device removal;
  • third-party platform permissions.

The fourth-generation product’s current page supports Google Home and other Matter-enabled apps and voice assistants. Nest Thermostat also supports Google Home and Matter and lists Hey Google and Alexa through compatible devices.

Legacy third-generation Learning Thermostat and Nest Thermostat E can still depend on the Nest app for parts of their experience. Do not assume an older product has the same app, Matter, sensor, schedule, or account route as a current model.

Google Home Premium is not a required thermostat cost

Google currently markets Google Home Premium at:

Standard:
$10/month or $100/year

Advanced:
$20/month or $200/year

The current subscription page focuses on cameras, doorbells, speakers, displays, Gemini, video history, and security features. The current thermostat requirements list Google Home app, Google Account, Wi-Fi, compatible HVAC, and related platform requirements—not a Google Home Premium subscription.

Do not add Google Home Premium to thermostat cost unless the household separately wants a subscription-only ecosystem feature and has verified its current eligibility and terms.

Nest Renew and utility programs

Google’s current thermostat category says Nest Renew is free to join and can help shift energy use toward cleaner or less-expensive times.

That does not mean:

  • the service is available in every location or utility territory;
  • every household should enroll;
  • it guarantees savings;
  • the event, data, or schedule behavior is acceptable;
  • a rebate or reward applies to the exact model or address.

C22 owns local rebates, rewards, subscriptions, total cost, and any future approved payback method. C19 records only that the optional route exists and requires separate terms review.

Manufacturer savings claims are not household forecasts

Google currently markets:

  • an “up to 31%” heating/cooling-bill claim on Nest Thermostat product pages;
  • historical averages of roughly 10–12% heating and 15% cooling savings in Nest support materials.

Do not use those numbers to rank the two current products or forecast one home.

A learning schedule, Quick Schedule, occupancy/presence sensing, Eco, Adaptive Eco, or Savings Finder can only save energy when it changes operation in a way that the household, HVAC system, climate, comfort requirements, and building allow.

C16 owns the savings-evidence and upgrade-or-not boundary.

Warranty and professional installation route

Current official warranty guidance states:

| Product | Standard U.S. retail warranty | Qualifying U.S. Nest Pro warranty |
|—|—:|—:|
| Nest Thermostat (2020) | 1 year | 3 years |
| Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) | 2 years | 5 years |

The Pro extension applies only to eligible Pro editions sold and installed by a Nest Pro, and the installer must enter the Pro ID at installation. A consumer retail purchase does not automatically receive the Pro term.

Before using warranty as a decision field, save:

  • exact model and SKU;
  • seller and market;
  • new/refurbished/used condition;
  • standard or Pro edition;
  • installer identity;
  • Pro ID registration;
  • proof of purchase;
  • exclusions, labor, shipping, and service terms;
  • transfer and move-out implications.

Security updates, software, privacy, and account transfer

Google states that connected-home products receive automatic critical security updates for at least five years from the date Google first sells them on the U.S. Google Store. “At least five years from first sale” is not the same as five years from your purchase date.

Nest thermostats update software when connected to reliable Wi-Fi and internet. Current 2020 Nest Thermostat and fourth-generation Learning Thermostat can also check for updates from the thermostat interface.

Before purchase, record:

  • current first-sale/security-support record for the exact model;
  • whether the remaining support horizon is acceptable;
  • automatic-update and Wi-Fi requirements;
  • Google Account and home-owner roles;
  • household-member access;
  • presence sensing and phone-location settings;
  • Matter multi-admin connections;
  • third-party services;
  • data export/deletion/reset route;
  • move-out or ownership transfer plan.

Google’s Nest privacy materials describe ambient and activity sensors such as motion, occupancy, light, temperature, and humidity. A household that does not accept those data or account practices should keep the existing thermostat or choose another route.

Legacy and used-product boundary

Google’s current comparison page labels Nest Learning Thermostat (3rd gen) as no longer sold. Nest Thermostat E is also absent from the current U.S. direct line.

An older product can remain functional and supported without being a current equivalent purchase. Record separately:

exact generation
condition
seller
included base and trim
sensor compatibility
app route
Matter/platform support
warranty remaining
security-update status
return terms
replacement-part availability
current compatibility result

Do not use an old model name without generation. Do not treat a marketplace or used price as the current Google Store price of a new product.

Product-line routing examples

These are method demonstrations, not recommendations.

| Declared requirement after C17 | Current model(s) that can remain before final exact review | Why |
|—|—|—|
| Simple cleared 1H/1C system; guided schedule acceptable; no room sensor/accessory; conservative hardware budget under $150 | Nest Thermostat | Lower reference amount and narrower requirements fit |
| Cleared 2H/2C conventional system | Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) | Nest Thermostat cannot support simultaneous 2H/2C |
| Cleared system requiring current whole-home humidifier/dehumidifier/ventilation route | Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen), subject to exact connector/checker review | Current Learning model exposes the accessory route |
| One room sensor included | Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) | One second-generation sensor is included; Nest Thermostat is sensor-incompatible |
| Learning schedule and Dynamic Farsight required | Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) | Those current features are not on Nest Thermostat |
| Matter required, no sensor or advanced HVAC accessory required | Both can remain if C17 clears them | Matter alone does not decide between them |
| Five-year qualifying Pro warranty required | Nest Learning Thermostat (4th gen) through exact Pro route | Current Pro term differs by model and transaction |
| C17 has not cleared either model | None—hold | Product features and price cannot replace compatibility evidence |
| Current thermostat already meets the need | No purchase | C16 controls the decision before product selection |

Changing one requirement can change the surviving product. There is no universal Nest winner.

Product-line worksheet

Use one row per exact model and transaction.

| New, legacy, refurbished, used, retail, or Pro edition | |
| Seller or Nest Pro | |
| Stable list/reference amount | |
| Same-day cash price and promotion terms | |
| Heating/cooling stages required | |
| Heat pump/AUX/dual-fuel requirements | |
| Zones, transformers, fan speeds | |
| Required humidifier/dehumidifier/ventilation route | |
| Exact C-wire/Power Connector route | |
| Quick Schedule or learning schedule requirement | |
| Temperature Sensor requirement and included quantity | |
| Matter/platform/voice requirement | |
| Trim or electrical-box plate requirement | |
| Standard or Pro warranty requirement | |
| Google Account, Home members, presence, data, and update acceptance | |
| Nest Renew/utility-program interest | |
| Power Connector, trim, extra sensor, labor, wall, tax, permit fields | |

| Outcome | |

Allowed outcomes:

one or more exact-model candidates
professional review or Pro quote required
hold because compatibility, support, or cost is incomplete
incompatible exact model
no current model matches
keep existing / no purchase

When no Nest model remains

A no-purchase or different-product result is valid.

Choose another route when:

  • C16 says an upgrade is unnecessary;
  • C17 does not clear a current Nest model;
  • the system is line-voltage, millivolt, proprietary, communicating, solid-fuel, or otherwise outside the exact route;
  • required stages, zones, fans, accessories, or transformers are unsupported;
  • the Power Connector route is not approved for the system;
  • a Nest Temperature Sensor is required but only Nest Thermostat fits the budget or compatibility;
  • Google Account, Matter/platform, presence, privacy, or update obligations are unacceptable;
  • live hardware or installed cost is not justified without assumed savings;
  • permission or restoration ownership is unresolved;
  • HVAC/building service owns the problem.

The method succeeds when it prevents an unsupported purchase.

What remains unknown

This article does not establish:

  • compatibility with a specific home;
  • wiring or installation steps;
  • local code, permit, landlord, lease, or warranty authority;
  • exact live price, checkout total, installed cost, extra-sensor price, or current rebate;
  • household energy or dollar savings;
  • payback or lifecycle cost;
  • comfort improvement;
  • room-sensor placement success;
  • HVAC condition or repair need;
  • privacy, cybersecurity, cloud continuity, or long-term support superiority;
  • medical, health, humidity, IAQ, or life-support suitability;
  • product reliability or hands-on performance;
  • which Nest model is best for the population.
